This provocative article speaks to the challenges faced by elderly African refugees in the Phoenix area.
As we learned during the Integration Work Group case studies, elderly refugees from many cultures struggle to adjust, often feeling isolated and without purpose. The special needs of elderly refugees bring a host of challenges across the entire resettlement spectrum, requiring innovative and compassionate approaches.
The article highlights an idea being considered by the Lost Boys Center in Phoenix: starting a training program to help African refugee seniors become licensed childcare providers. The program would take into account the learning styles of the refugees, many of whom have never had formal education.
Comments? Can you share any effective services or ideas that have successfully engaged elderly refugees?
